Second Parish in Hingham

Unitarian Universalist

Visit

Welcome!  We are pleased that you are thinking of visiting us.

You may be looking for community, fellowship and a place to explore your spirituality.  If you are unsure of a spiritual path that is right for you, or what part a church can play in your life, we invite you to join us at our worship service on Sunday morning, as well as on Wednesday evening at our “Moments of Meditation”.

Second Parish is a Welcoming Congregation associated with the Unitarian Universalist Association. Our designation as a ‘Welcoming Congregation’ reflects our support of the UUA’s active inclusion of gays and lesbians, which fits in with our belief in “love for each other and respect for each person’s search for truth” as expressed in our covenant. We welcome individuals and families of any sexual orientation or gender identity.

Unitarianism is an open-minded approach to religion that allows for a wide range of beliefs.  We believe that each person should be free to search for meaning in their lives and to find satisfying answers.  We believe that religion should be broad, inclusive and tolerant, that there are many ways to understand God, the spirit of life, the great mystery, or the still small voice within each of us.  We believe that we can learn from one another’s experiences.  Thus the Unitarian faith includes people who identify themselves as Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, Pagan or Atheist.

One of the best sources for learning about Unitarian Universalism in North America today is the video “Voices of a Liberal Faith”

What if I am visiting with children?

At the beginning of the service, the children sit with their parents in the sanctuary.  After listening to “Time for All Ages,” they go to their classrooms with their teachers.  You might like to get in touch with our Coordinator of Religious Education at dre@secondparish.org to let her know you are coming.  If you arrive a little early on your first visit, you can see the religious education classrooms and introduce your children to our teachers.  Your children are always welcome to stay in the sanctuary with you until the Sunday they feel ready to go with the other children to their classrooms.  (For more information about our religious education program, please see the LEARN tab.)  After their classes, the children join us in Cushing Hall for coffee hour.

What should I wear?

You will see a wide range of dress on Sunday mornings, from suits and dresses to khakis or dressy jeans. At holiday services, such as Christmas and Easter, people often dress more formally. Please wear whatever makes you comfortable.

What is the Wednesday Evening “Hour of Peace”?

On Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:00 the sanctuary (or the more cozy library in the winter) is open for quiet contemplation.  People are invited to read or sit quietly, listening to music and thinking about what matters most to them.  Also, our minister, Stephanie Shute Kelsch, will briefly share the issue she is grappling with for the upcoming Sunday service.  This is not a formal service, but rather a time for reflection for any who attend.
